New meaning of the preposition "about"?

Main Post:

Over the past couple of months I have heard some native English speakers using "about" in a way that I would use "because of" for. For example, "I've had a bad day so I'm going to go get ice cream about it". Is there a name for this feature and has it been written about anywhere?

Top Comment: So in one sense this is an extremely old sense of about: extending the spatial sense of proximity to the figurative sense of "concerning, regarding, with regard to, in reference to; in the matter of". OED dates this sense to Old English. Your example sounds a bit unnatural because, more recently, this sense about has been restricted to certain verbal phrases dealing with mental states, words, depictions: Now the regular preposition employed to define the subject matter of verbal or mental activity in a large number of verbal phrases such as to speak, think, ask, dream, hear about; to give orders, instructions, information about; to form plans, have doubts about [...] [Also commonly] Following adjectives expressing mental or emotional states. So what you probably have here is an extension from established phrases like plan or think to the phrase going to—which for a lot of people is a lexicalized gonna which can be used to talk about plans or intentions. If you think of gonna as describing your mental state, it's not so far a leap from I [am depressed about] about my bad day. or I [wrote in my diary] about my bad day. to I ['m gonna get ice cream] about my bad day. If you think of going to as more of a generic future tense, then you might bracket this differently: ?I am going to [get ice cream] about my bad day. which feels more ungrammatical because the verb get describes an action, not a mental state, which modernly doesn't work with this sense of about. Physical actions with about imply spatial relationships, not the more abstract relationships involving abstract verbs. We can see this more directly by dropping the gonna: ?I got ice cream about my bad day. Incidentally, that last example—using about basically just as a substitute for because of, was briefly (early 17th century) seen in English per OED but it now obsolete. So another possibility is we're seeing that come back. But I think the above account explains why we might hear native speakers say I've had a bad day so I'm going to go get ice cream about it. and not ?The Moon orbits Earth about gravity.

New here, how does Reddit actually work?

Main Post:

Hi I just joined Reddit and I’m trying to understand how it all works. What’s the basic idea behind how people use reddit? Anything I should know as a total beginner?

Can someone explain the culture of Reddit?

Main Post:

I've never really used reddit and I don't really know the implicit rules of this network. I know, for example, that it's apparently frowned upon to post links? What other things should I know as a newbie? Thanks

How is reddit so popular yet I never hear it mentioned irl?

Main Post:

I hear about tiktok and instagram the most, and i did hear about snapchat more in high school. But i never hear about reddit.

Top Comment: Well for me, it’s my one anonymous internet account. Nobody I know in real life has my screen name for Reddit. I think the majority of people on here feel the same way. My sister in law just discovered Reddit and asked for my name on here and I had to politely let her down and tell her that it’s not that kind of social media... for me at least.
